Sharada Kumar met Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda at a Gita jnana yajna at Shivaji Park, Mumbai, in 1963, during her college years. She was totally mesmerized by his teachings and persona. She chanted "Bhagavad Gita" verses during his lectures in Bhopal in 1969 and continued to until he attained mahasamadhi in 1993. He would jokingly refer to her as “HMV,†or “Her Master’s Voice.†She also chanted the verses on the professionally recorded DVDs of his talks on "Bhagavad Gita" and "Vivekachudamani."
As instructed by Pujya Gurudev, she went to Mumbai, India to get special training in teaching Bala Vihars in 1973. Thereafter, she began the first Chinmaya Bala Vihar on the East Coast in Long Island, New York.
In the 1970s and early 1980s, she and her husband, Viswa Kumar, organized several CM national camps and yajnas in and around New York. During the Humboldt Camp in 1974, some of her bhajans were recorded for the first time with Brahmacharini Pavitra Chaitanya.
Invited by Pujya Gurudev, she traveled with him all over India from 1989 to 1990, getting direct tutelage from him in conducting Bhagavad Git
