Dr. Shailaja Nadkarni and her husband, Dr. Shyam Nadkarni, first met Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda in Pittsburgh, at a Gita jnana yajna, in August 1984. Inspired by his divine presence, during their first bhiksha with him, they asked Pujya Gurudev how they could learn more about Bhagavad Gita and introduce their children to Hindu culture and religion. Pujya Gurudev personally guided and instructed them how to conduct Chinmaya Bala Vihar for children and told Shailaja to start Chinmaya Study Groups. In 1987, Chinmaya Mission Orlando began, along with Bala Vihar and Study Group classes.

Pujya Gurudev appointed Shyam Nadkarni as the president of Chinmaya Mission Orlando in 1989. The Mission acquired property in Orlando, Florida, and Pujya Gurudev inaugurated the “Tapovan” ashram in 1990, after which all the classes were conducted there regularly and they flourished.

Shailaja traveled with Pujya Gurudev during his university tour in 1991, and attended his United Nations address. She accompanied him to Hong Kong and India in 1992. During his stay in Orlando, he appointed Shailaja as a member of CMW’s Board of Directors. On Shyam’s passing away in 2008, Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda appointed Shailaja as the president of Chinmaya Mission Orlando. Two months later, Pujya Guruji conferred on her the title of a Chinmaya Mission “Acharya.”

At present, Acharya Shailaja is conducting Bala Vihar, Gita, Vivekachudmani, and other Vedanta classes at Chinmaya Mission Orlando. She is also spearheading the expansion project of the current ashram facilities, and overseeing two satellite locations in Daytona Beach and Kissimmee, Florida.
